Mac OS X features Time Machine to restore your lost data whenever you need. The tool typically creates a periodic backup your entire system and maintains a copy to the date of your important files to the Mac itself or on an external hard drive, regardless of configured. But if the backup image refuses to be accessed, you need an alternative to recover Mac data. The Snow Leopard, Time Machine is an incompatibility with AirPort Extreme disk, iDisk, Windows formatted disk, and any network server that uses other than Apple File Protocol (AFP) file sharing. For this reason, a snow leopard user may observe its Time Machine backup failed to restore time.
To develop such problems, Suppose you create a Time Machine backup on an external drive connected to your computer running Snow Leopard. Some of your important files (s) is removed or you observe a situation of data loss. When you try to access the backup, it gives an error "109" which further suggests that the image disc can not be accessed.
CAUSE
The error "109" usually occurs when the user creates a backup over the network or external drive is connected to the AirPort Extreme that are not compatible with Time Machine in Snow Leopard. Although AirPort Extreme seem to operate in May as a solution Time Machine, but it is not supported.
The network server must use file sharing and AFP both computers (root and network) should be installed with Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later to work with Time Machine.
Solution
You can replace the AirPort Disk Extreme with the Time Capsule. In some cases, the following workarounds may also compel the AirPort Extreme hard at work:
