The urgent need for the battery is sufficiently long enough to last a day has never been more compelling. But they are not the result of better battery technologies. The scramble to find new and better replacement batteries remains a challenge.
Micro Fuel Cells
What seems like a sleepy landscape of the battery may soon change with the introduction of micro-batteries fuel. The new type of battery technology promises higher levels of energy that can last more times longer. We're not talking about just one 8 hours, but more as a tenfold increase in battery life that we have today. That's about 50 hours. Imagine if computers laptops can stay for 2-3 days on a single charge. The marketing possibilities are immense competitive. Micro Fuel Cells should apply not only for laptops but for other mobile gadgets like cell phones and handsets games.
To date more than 60 companies, including IBM, Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, Panasonic and Motorola are competing to develop and commercialize the battery of micro-fuel cells. Some of these companies are turning their attention to new technologies to recharge fuel cells without relying on electricity. New York-based Medis Technologies by example, has developed a disposable Power Pack it claims can power cell phones up to 20 hours to recharge or 5 to 6 times before getting eliminated.
Micro fuel cells will take a little over a year to become commercially available on the market. This will certainly laptops to stimulate additional sales. This is a multi-billion once it reached the same level of maturity that lithium based batteries. GP
